Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage is arguably his finest record of the 60s, reaching a perfect balance between accessible, lyrical jazz and chance-taking hard bop.
By the time Hancock recorded the album, he had been in the Miles Davis Quintet for several years, an experience he, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams, the rhythm section, all described as transformative.
Featuring the great trumpet of Freddie Hubbard and the bracing tenor of George Coleman, the record is as good as any effort turned in by Hancock during that period. It's a record every jazz fan should know.
Jazz pianist Robert Mitchell has put together a band of London's finest musicians to play Herbie Hancock's defining album in full, plus some of his most popular songs.
