More Information about Dover Castle

Dover Castle

Known as 'The key to England', the great fortress of Dover Castle has played a crucial role in the defence of the realm for over nine centuries. Set high above the famous white cliffs, it boasts a colourful and fascinating history. Don’t miss the recently refurbished Admiralty Lookout, where you can learn about the techniques used to detect enemy ships and even try your hand at Morse code! Also take time to explore the atmospheric medieval underground tunnels, see one of Europe’s best-preserved Roman lighthouses and visit the siege experience of 1216 and find out what it may have been like to be a medieval soldier under siege and explore the towering keep with its spectacular views across the channel.

Great Tower

Dover Castle now hosts in its Great Tower a uniquely vivid recreation of a medieval royal palace. Begin your visit with the introductory exhibition and then discover the vibrant, technicolour world inside the Great Tower. Follow lifelike hologram figures of King Henry II and his courtiers round the palace’s private chambers, guest rooms and great hall, along with the kitchen and armoury.

Secret Wartime Tunnels

Discover Dover Castle's labyrinth of secret wartime tunnels built deep in the White Cliffs of Dover. Sights, sounds and pathe news clips bring the drama of its strategic role in WWII alive. Walk through the rooms where Sir Admiral Ramsay planned the “miracle of Dunkirk” and tour the underground hospital as you follow the story of a wounded wartime pilot.
