Wicked the Musical: See the Wonderful Witches of Oz for a Wicked Time

It's been described as The Wizard of Oz from the witches' perspective, but Wicked is so much more than just that. A hit in its own right, this riotous show has taken stages around the world by storm thanks to its fanatical script and deep, interwoven storyline. You're thrust into the early lives of two witches, Glinda and Elphaba. The former is the type of beautiful, superficial girl you'd see in the average high school teen drama. The latter is green, misunderstood and misrepresented. As their journey through school and out into the magical world of Oz unfolds, we're told Glinda is the Good Witch of the South. However, are we really meant to believe that Wicked Witch of the West is a fitting title for Elphaba? Therein lies the crux of Wicked and its widespread, relentless appeal. By subverting expectations and taking you on a magical ride, Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman have created a truly captivating show. Indeed, with records, box office receipts and awards to its name, Wicked is a modern musical that's already become a classic.

Why Wicked is a Magical Musical
Perhaps the biggest reason for Wicked earning over $1 billion/£828 million on Broadway since 2003 and enduring on the West End for more than a decade is its storyline. By creating genuine tension, drama and uncertainty between the central characters, writer Winnie Holzman has made a show worth watching even without the musical interludes and incredible lyrics, written by Stephen Szhwarts. However, for those that choose to embrace the magic of Wicked in the West End, the staging can't be ignored. With a cast of 36 kitted out in colourful and creative costumes, the stage is constantly buzzing with life. Add to this some impressive and imposing scenery and you?re pulled into a world of fantasy from the start. Finally, you can't ignore the songs. From rock tunes to power ballads, the songs of Wicked take you on an emotional rollercoaster. Of course, anyone that's done their research will be waiting for the international hit Defying Gravity to drop. However, with evocative tracks such as No Good Deed and poptastic numbers like I'm Not That Girl on the playlist, you'll be bobbing along throughout the show.
